I am currently a third grade student in the information engineering department of National Chi Nan University in Taiwan. I am quite interested in Natural Language Processing as well as in Artificial Intelligence.
I want to join Debian because there are too few DD in Chinese regions and particularly no DD in Taiwan. So our users in Taiwan usually can not get immediate support for Chinese releated Debian packages, even if it is critical or serious. So I intend to contribute as much as I can on Chinese related packages in Debian.
The first time I touched free software and GNU/Linux was during my senior high school, I was intended to learn programming, but getting the programmi ng environment and tools on a Windows system are too expensive and that I can not afford. One day, I stumbled over a book in a bookstore which told about Linux and the GNU philosophy, and the I realised that that was what I wante d.
I started from Red Hat 7.2+CLE(Chinese GNU/inux Extensions), and then switc hed to Debian one day and experienced the holy moo power of apt-get. I was quite happy because I didn't get any trouble during the installation althou gh I tried Debian just after Woody had been released. Everything went smooth, so Debian became my favorite OS since that time.
The Free Software community gives me the wonderful freedom to use the tools and to modify programs for my needs, and also gives me the spirit of sharing. N ow it is time to give something back to the community. Currently I am already supporting local users by answering questions, reporting and solving bugs through the Debian BTS, and writing tools to make Chinese usage easier.
Debian is the OS I love most. I am glad to share my happiness with the community. I wish to help to make the usage of Debian become easier, especi ally for Chinese users. Because the cultures and languages are different, developers from other regions might not understand what we need and might not be able to solve the problems we have.
So I want to become a DD to support our Chinese speaking users better.
